    Just Traveling & Reflecting

Sunday. June 25, 2017. An airplane. The last 2 days have been filled with traveling in the most boring sense. I left Yosemite yesterday at 0930, got to the Amtrak at 1313 and waited for 2 hours before boarding. I then took the Bart into San Francisco to get checked into my bunkhouse after 2000. This morning I woke up at 0645 to eat breakfast and buy SF souvenirs before heading to the airport at 1230 (all made more difficult by the pride parade happening in the home of the first LGBTQ community.) My first flight was delayed 45 minutes and then my second flight by 2 hours and 45…

    Last Day

(I apologize for the delay in a post, I am still struggling to have a consistent schedule and priorities with this taxing night shift schedule. Never fear though, I am finishing my posts about California, and then moving directly into my South Dakota trip I just got back from last week. This journal entry is from my last day in Yosemite, and typing it is surely making me miss being out in the wilderness and away from everything.) Friday. June 24, 2017. Yosemite (Camp 4) Last night in my humble abode, until my next adventure that is. I am obviously excited to go home to my cats, family, bed, and…

Glacier Point, ice cream, and hitching a ride

Thursday. June 23, 2017. Yosemite (Camp 4) Today’s adventure was a hike up to Glacier Point on the 4 Mile Trail, which is a 4.6 mile trail up out of the valley to an elevation around 7200ft. That is higher than Yosemite Falls. However today’s hike seemed much easier, still strenuous, but easier. One, the elevation is more gradual with an additional mile of trail. Two, the switch backs are longer and less rocky. Three, it is on the south rim of the valley, so the sun was not directly shining on me the whole way, especially starting at 10am. Yay shade! (Read one of my past entries about the…

    The Mist Trail

Wednesday. June 21, 2017. Yosemite (Camp 4) Finally an improvement in how I am feeling, although my shoulders look worse now that they are healing some. Skin has been peeling off at different stages, so I am approximately 9 different colors. All painful looking, most dry and cracked, and a couple still blistered. Also apparently I have been getting “sweat blisters” the past day or two, which are satisfying to scratch at (and probably should not do?) Anyways, today I went on a hike up the mist trail, that definitely lives up to its name. The portion up to Vernal Falls is incredibly easy, especially when you consider the past…

    Camp 4

Tuesday. June 20, 2017. Yosemite (Camp 4). Overall a better day! I started off still sick and unsure of what to do. So I tore down my camp at the backpacker’s camp and set off towards the rest of the valley without any real plan. I had managed to eat an applesauce squeeze without feeling worse, so I finally settled on trying a real cooked meal at one of the hotel’s restaurants. I was able to eat pretty well, but soon after become increasingly more nauseous. So I headed to Camp 4, the only first come first serve camp. Each site at this camp holds six people, regardless of how…

    When it Rains, it Pours

Monday. June 19, 2017. Yosemite (backpacker’s camp). Today started off as a good day, but quickly turned south. I woke up at 5 originally and was like “nope” and went back to sleep until 7:30 ish. I got up and slowly started my day, I was noticeably sore, that is for sure. The hike out of Snow Creek started off easy but then became ~10,000 switchbacks down the mountain. (Slight exaggeration, but not by much.) I was battling nausea the whole time, I literally had to force myself to eat breakfast, which is so unlike me. Once I made it down the mountain it was a several mile hike down…

Sunday. June 18, 2017. Yosemite (past Snow Creek). Pretty sure today is the first Father’s Day I have not been with my dad, which is kinda tough. I gave him his present early and still was able to text him (thank you Verizon for having service in the middle of nowhere), but it is obviously not the same. Today was much different than yesterday. There were not nearly as many people. It started off pretty steady, as I passed people on their way to the falls from staying out in the back country. But after a while, there was no one else left to pass. Which is just as well.…

    Up the Falls

Saturday. June 17, 2017. Yosemite. Well here I am, laying down in my tent, my home for the next week. Getting here has been a hassle, for months even if I am being honest. But so far, it already has been worth it. Yes it sucks, just like one would expect, but in such a good way. So this morning I had one option to get to Yosemite as I previously explained;┬áthe Merced Yarts to the express Yarts in Mariposa, with 6 minutes between the two. Unfortunately my first bus driver was 25 minutes late. I immediately confronted her and asked “What am I going to do?!” She was new,…

    When Things Go Wrong

Friday. June 16, 2017. On a train somewhere in CA. Today has truly been a mess. I did nothing exciting to even distract from all of the things that went wrong. So this morning I woke up to get breakfast and cruffins at a local bakery that according to the internet is all the rage. They were delicious, so I understand. I then had to go check out of my room and leave my pack with them for a while. After that I went and got a massage in Chinatown, which reminded me of home and my frequented foot spas. Of course I am so sun burnt that it hurt…

    Exploring SF

Thursday. June 15, 2017. San Francisco. So a quick story. On Tuesday night after I finished packing everything into my pack, which was quite a struggle and took two attempts, I realized my pack was almost as full as it could get (mind you everything was stuffed inside for the flight). Therefore it was incredibly heavy. So I went through and took out what I deemed I could; all of a granola bar, applesauce squeeze, some energy gels, and sunscreen. I am guessing you know where this is going… and no, I am not in desperate need of a 40cal applesauce packet right now. I did however just have to…
